how it works

"To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe."

— Anatole Francee

People engage the services of a life coach or counselor to help them produce positive changes and fulfilling results in a variety of areas, including career, health, relationships and personal development. Life coaching and counseling are both powerful, effective approaches for achieving goals. There are some differences to consider, however, before deciding which would be most appropriate for your needs.

What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is a collaborative relationship designed to help you identify and achieve what is most important to you. It is characterized by a unique communication process designed to foster clarity, motivate learning and inspire positive action. Because coaching is basically used for assessing and strategizing, it can be done in person or over the phone.

Although it is an interactive partnership, it is you the client who is ultimately responsible for determining the focus of conversation, defining specific goals, taking action and creating success. The role of your life coach is to listen, ask questions, brainstorm, offer suggestions and observations, challenge, encourage and support the process.

Coaching Versus Counseling or Psychotherapy

Coaching is largely oriented to the present and future, and counseling to the understanding of how the past impacts the present. It is said that coaching focuses on the “whats” and “hows”, and counseling on the “whys”. The emphasis in coaching is on learning and doing, not on resolving psychological issues or improving emotional states.

Both counseling and coaching help reveal a client’s potential and personal assets. Evaluation and treatment of deficits and pathology, however, can only be done by a counselor or psychotherapist. Counseling is the treatment intervention for disorders like depression and anxiety.

Counseling can help to facilitate insight, heal emotional pain and resolve issues from the past that impinge on life satisfaction and functionality. Life coaching supports clients in setting better goals, enhancing skills, taking more action and bridging the gap between where they are now and where they want to be next.

Although a counselor may offer suggestions or provide education, her role is usually less directive than that of the life coach. Counseling is more insight oriented compared to the action-orientation of coaching.

How It Works

To achieve the best results, it is recommended that clients commit to a series of regular life coaching or counseling sessions over a 3 – 6 month period. Coaching sessions can take place over the phone or in person. Individual, marital and family counseling sessions are best conducted in person.

Life coaching and counseling sessions are by appointment. Each meeting lasts about 55 minutes, with the exception of the initial “discovery” session that may take 60-90 minutes. You will receive a packet of information, questionnaires and guides to help you get started. You are welcome to call or email at any time along the way if you have questions or want to share your insights and progress.

The fee for each life coaching or counseling session, is $145.00, payable by cash, check or credit card at the time of service. A treatment invoice can be provided if the client would like to submit it to his insurance company. Please contact us now to see if Inspired Life Coaching or Counseling is right for you.
